Approved Organizations

Before volunteering, make sure your sponsoring organization is a public nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization or agency. This designation does not guarantee the organization will be approved for student service, however. For instance, organizations or entities that do not serve the greater good of the general public will not be approved, such as work done for private businesses, private schools, or private summer camps. If your organization is not listed on the pre-approved list, it may still qualify for approved service if all activities and the organization itself follow the CIS GUIDELINES (see Guidelines on the Table of Contents on our menu.)

Please note, simply because an organization is included on the Cavs in Service Approved Organization List, it does not qualify all activities for the organization as approved. All service for Approved Organizations must follow our Cavs in Service Guidelines and be part of a supervised volunteer program officially recognized by the Approved Organization.

Pre-approved organizations can be found here (use CTRL-F to search for a particular organization):

If volunteering for an organization not on the List of Approved Organizations, before volunteering, the student should complete and submit the following form to CIS faculty sponsor via a paper copy to Ms. Stearns in the library, and have an in-person conversation about the addition. There is no guarantee work will be accepted if it has been done for an organization that has not been approved and included on the Approved Organization List, and there is no possibility that the work will be approved if it does not follow our Cavs in Service Guidelines and adhere to the expectations of an volunteer opportunity officially recognized and supervised by the Approved Organization.

If a student plans to volunteer over the summer for an organization not on the List of Approved Organizations, the student should submit a form by May 1st for approval. This list is sporadically updated throughout the year as needed.

The CAVS IN SERVICE committee cannot guarantee service credit for a non-approved organization even if the hours have already been performed, though retroactive approval is common if all CIS GUIDELINES are met by the service and by the institution.
